# Give an Agent a task

> Assign a task, watch it run, and approve the result.

A task is work you hand to an Agent. The Agent runs it on its own and reports back, and you approve the result or ask for changes. A chat is for talking; a task is for work that should finish by itself.

## Before you start

[Create an Agent](/guides/create-your-first-agent.md). A new Agent cannot take tasks yet: it has no task tools, and its autonomy is **manual**, which asks you before every action. A task runs with nobody there to answer, so step 4 sets the Agent up.

## Steps

1. Open **Tasks** in the left rail. With no tasks you see "No tasks".
2. Select **New task** (or the **+** button).
3. Enter a **Title** (for example `Draft a launch checklist`) and a **Description** — the brief the Agent works from.
4. Under **Assign to**, an Agent that cannot take tasks is listed with the reason. Select **Set up for tasks** on it. A sheet explains what changes:

   * the Agent gets the task tools (start, update, finish, fail, escalate, attach a file, get and list tasks);
   * its autonomy changes from **manual** to **supervised**, in all its conversations, not only tasks. Supervised asks only before risky actions, such as running commands or writing files.

Select **Set up**. You can change both later in the Agent's settings.

5. Select the Agent under **Assign to**, then select **Create**.

The task opens as **#1**. Its status is **queued**, then **working**. The **Activity** list shows each step the Agent takes, and **Stop task** cancels the run.

A task that has just started.

6. When the Agent finishes, the status becomes **in review**. The **Result** section holds what it produced, and a banner says "Waiting for your review". The task also appears under **Needs you** in the list.

A finished task waiting for your review.

7. Read the result, then choose:
   * **Approve** — the task becomes **done**.
   * **Request changes** — say what should change; the Agent redoes the task.

After you approve, the task shows done.

## Good to know

* Add a note while a task runs with **Comment**. The Agent reads comments the next time it works on the task.
* A task needs an Agent that is active, not on manual autonomy, and has the task tools. See [Tasks](/worksong/tasks.md) and [Approvals](/worksong/approvals.md).
